Summer Day at Lake Trebgast

2026

Oil on Canvas,  40 × 40 cm

The painting Summer Day at Lake Trebgast is dedicated to one of the most renowned natural and recreational landscapes of Upper Franconia, Lake Trebgast (Trebgaster Badesee), situated near the municipality of Trebgast in the district of Kulmbach, Bavaria, Germany. The lake is an artificial body of water covering approximately 68,000 square metres, inaugurated in 1975 within the historic Trebgast Valley, where fish ponds belonging to the Margraves of Bayreuth were located during the eighteenth century. Today, it represents one of the most significant recreational and landscape destinations in the Franconian region.

From a compositional perspective, the work is structured according to the principles of the classical panoramic landscape. The spatial arrangement unfolds from the flowering lakeside foreground across the reflective surface of the lake towards the distant wooded hills that form the natural framework of the Trebgast Valley. The depicted elevations belong to the undulating foothill landscape of Upper Franconia, extending between the valleys of Trebgast and the White Main (Weißer Main) and characterised by a combination of forested areas and open meadows.

The pictorial structure of the painting combines characteristics of contemporary realist landscape painting with elements of the Post-Impressionist tradition. The composition is organised through the interaction of the horizontal plane of the water surface and the gentle contours of the surrounding hills. A central role is assigned to the system of reflections, which establishes visual equilibrium between physical space and its optical counterpart within the water.

The chromatic scheme is based on a harmonious balance between cool and warm tonalities. Dominant hues include emerald green, olive green, blue and turquoise, complemented by luminous yellow-green accents within the sunlit shoreline vegetation. Localised passages of violet wildflowers function as chromatic accents, enhancing both spatial depth and visual rhythm.

The technical execution is characterised by the layered application of oil paint, employing subtle glazing transitions in combination with expressive textural brushwork within the vegetation zones. Particular attention is devoted to the rendering of atmospheric effects, the light-filled environment, and the complex system of reflections across the water surface. Through the careful treatment of light, the lake assumes the role of an active compositional centre that unifies the various elements of the landscape into a coherent visual structure.

From an art-historical perspective, the work demonstrates an aspiration to synthesise direct observation of nature with painterly interpretation. The actual landscape of Trebgast is not reproduced in a strictly documentary manner but is reinterpreted through the expressive means of colour, light and spatial rhythm. As a result, the painting transcends the mere topographical representation of a specific location and emerges as a visual study of the interaction between the natural environment, the aquatic landscape, and the cultural geography of Franconia.
