The painting The White Main beneath Plassenburg is dedicated to one of the key natural and historical features of the Kulmbach landscape – the White Main (Weißer Main), which originates in the Fichtel Mountains and forms one of the two headwaters of the River Main. Near Kulmbach, the White Main joins the Red Main (Roter Main) to create the River Main, the largest tributary of the Rhine. The composition depicts a section of the river valley within the urban landscape of Kulmbach, where the natural river course interacts with engineered hydraulic structures and canalized waterways that have historically contributed to flood control and water management.
In the distance, the silhouette of Plassenburg Castle appears above the surrounding landscape. For more than eight centuries, the fortress has dominated the skyline of Upper Franconia and remains one of the region’s principal historical landmarks. Within this composition, however, the castle serves not as the primary subject but as a distant architectural reference linking the river landscape with the cultural heritage of Kulmbach.
The work is structured as a multi-layered landscape composition. The foreground is formed by riverside vegetation and the reflective surface of the White Main, while meadows, trees, and rolling hills gradually lead the viewer’s eye toward the distant castle. A system of reflections on the water creates visual cohesion and reinforces the spatial unity of the composition. The colour palette is based on the interaction of cool blue-green tones with warm ochre and earthy accents, conveying the atmosphere of a bright summer day and the changing effects of natural light.
